TUESDAY POETRY CHALLENGE 3-24-09

Postby Mlou » Tue Mar 24, 2009 9:14 am

Last week's challenge got off to a slow start but ended doing well. Let's see what's in store for us this week...

1. Coin a phrase to describe an occupation (for example: "dance of the hands" for a potter) and use it in a poem.
...Please cite the phrase you have coined...

2. What do you daydream about? A verse about a daydream please.

3. And a word list from which to build your poem:
plume, tranquil, distinct, bell, splendid, breath, rise, tangle, waste

It's the flowing of ink
the endless motion of paper turning
that moment
when I post my poetry
that under my name appears
"Fear of the Shadow" by Olsen W. Potter
at Amazon.com followed by a red link

I daydream of publishing my writing
and people actually reading it
I'll leave you a note in the freezer.

You can make it happen, Olsen! That's one daydream that CAN come true. Maybe not Amazon right at first but lots of possibilities are out there.

(I have 2 short stories on Amazon and I'm wondering if ANYONE, ANYWHERE has ever downloaded either of them. I guess my daydream is to have someone email me and say they bought my .49 story and loved it.)

Energy? Ms, I have eight books...count 'em...of poetry, compiled over the years and still ongoing. Unfortunately there is NO market for "books" of poetry...unless you're a poet laureate or something. But there ARE still markets here and there for single poems. Thanks be for that, at least. :-D

Actually, anyone who really wants to use the energy and put together a book of their poems, can almost surely get them published on PublishAmerica. And there's no fee charged. You only have to give them a list of no more than 100 names that they can send annoucements to, when the book comes out. The promotion and selling are up to the author but if you don't care about mega-sales and just want to see your book in print that's the way to go. Or if you don't have the time and inclination to spend a lifetime approaching big publishers who will ignore you anyway.

Dreaming of finding Mr.Prince Charming
Will he ever come around?
A tall handsome prince
Coming to take me away to his castle
With a big white horse
And flowers
The sweetest thing that I dream about...
That will someday come true
In my wildest dreams

I havent been on very much (long story) anyways..Im back..I will try and be on once a week.

A Day's Work

A quill for a brush
and ink for paints;
splashing color on the page
with my words.
Using metaphors and rhyme
and meter for perspective
I draw pictures
in free verse and sonnet
Not a pointillist,
nor an impressionist,
nor a painter in oil.
Instead, a storyteller, a poet
an artist in word.
My heart beats in poetry. I think in rhythm and dream in rhyme.

Give me a crit! I can take it!

Very vivid picture, mae. You might say we are impressionists of words.

Groovy poem Mae. Although I didn't know what pointillist means. Can anyone enlighten me?

BECOMING
On the potter's wheel
thrown clay rises.
Sinuous, ever-changing,
shaping itself to bowl
or slender jar, it obeys
the dance of the hands.
nothing is ever simply Yes or No. There's always a But...

Breathe
i lay,
auburn hair tangled,
woven through fingers
breath rising, falling
meadow scent distinctly inhaled ~
time disappears beneath
bluebell skies
streaked with cloud plumes
splendid tranquil morning
wasted on unsmelled roses.

okay so it needs work... but i wanted to at least write SOMETHING! sigh...

Could be construed as hitting 2 challenges...daydream and list. Good job...and it's never wasted if you're recharging your batteries.

Word List

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

How splendid our peacock was,
in his raiment of turquoise and gold.
How tranquil his pace displaying
the distinct pattern of his fan.
How breath-taking the bell of his cry
rising through tangled branches
to startle morning.
And how practical was mother,
who saved every plume
that Blue Boy shed.
nothing is ever simply Yes or No. There's always a But...

#3 Word list

FRENCH REVOLUTION

Ostrich plumes bob about the heads of fancy ladies
walking the tranquil French countryside,
their world distinct from that of the farmers
they pretend to emulate.
Church bells chime in splendid tones,
breaths apart on the scale,
rising with the morning,
above the tangled, wasted lives below.

MY DAYDREAM

Flat belly and firm breasts,
supple thighs and flexible back.
Swaying hips, shining hair,
chiseled cheeks, full lips.
And on top, wisdom for a cherry.
