TUESDAY POETRY CHALLENGE 7-22-08

Postby Mlou » Mon Jul 21, 2008 5:22 pm

1. By special request ( ) one challenge this week will seek a poem touching in any way on apples.

2. Here's a fill-in-the blanks challenge. Tailor this subject from the choices offered, and run with it...you don't necessarily use the sentence, just the idea that it represents., to create a poem.

This place is/was: haunted/beautiful/ramshackle/strange and I felt: threatened/awe-struck/pity/eyes watching and I: what did you do?

3. Many phrases we use actually originated with Shakespeare and very likely he "borrowed" them from some earlier source. Perhaps one may inspire a verse or two.

cold comfort...what's done is done...seen better days...love is blind...a charmed life...man of few words...grim necessity...holding your tongue
nothing is ever simply Yes or No. There's always a But...

hmmm... i hold my tongue... okay...

invisible

i keep quiet,
allow your words
to fill the silence,
too afraid to speak
and find i have nothing
valuable to say.

A Little Shakespearean Jocularity
(Hark, what goeth on below? How’d that apple get in there?)

Love is blind, though it has seen better days!
They now travel in tandem, going their separate ways.

Robust once, like green apples, firm and tart,
Now anxious about diet’s effect on their hearts.

It is said that a man truly enjoys a charmed life
If words of cold comfort aren’t spoken by his wife!

This man of few words is considered incisive,
If his choice of words with her are not divisive.

Being not as spry as when he was young,
Out of grim necessity he holds his tongue.

Now at the point where they wish they could rewind,
What’s done is done, and still at its best, love is blind!

RUSTIANA
My eyes tell me
she's not much
as cats go.
Her middle's too fat
and her tail's too thin.
She leaves
fur balls on the rug
and claw marks
on the furniture.
Cat show material?
not in this one
of her nine lives.
No matter...
love is blind.
nothing is ever simply Yes or No. There's always a But...

Here's one. As always, it's just a rough draft. And no, I don't drink... :)

Cold Comfort

Seductive sweat drips,
Ice cubes pop,
Naked crystal bobbing
In anticipation.

Amber liquid kisses the
Glass, promising
Release, a pornographic
Power play.

No means yes as
Fingers clasp and lips
Meet the soothing fire of
Consumptive need.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of an alcoholic, you know how they say that it's about more than getting drunk, it's about the feel of the glass in your hand and the sound of the ice cubes, etc.

But hey, caffiene addiction works too!

I think it could be about Dunkin' Donuts iced caramel swirl lattes, myself :-D

LizG- that was a great job.
If I still smoked, I would have had a cigarette after reading that one. :-D
