With all of the pretense that comes with emotion,
I strut like a king when I'm only a pawn;
I've kept my love for you carefully hidden …
But can't hide the heartbreak of knowing you're gone.

Well, look who's back! Have been wondering if you and Charles had decamped on us. :) Mae has a poem a day challenge running for April. How about hopping on board??
This one sounds like you've got song lyrics in mind today, Mudge.
nothing is ever simply Yes or No. There's always a But...

They do sort of feel like that, but honestly, no melody in mind. Like, at all.

Aflame like a wing caught too close to the fire,
I am a fool for society's sake:
For banging on doors that can never be opened;
For needing the love I can't make myself take.

For hurling myself through impassible mazes--
In search of an exit that doesn't exist--
While pain like an avalanche screams through my senses
As hard--and as soft--as a passionate kiss.

It's mostly self-serving to give in to pity ...
It's mostly short-sighted, relying on pride;
For I'm like a mannequin, skillfully painted,
But hollow and lifeless and useless inside.

There are seven short miles of highway between us
But it could be forever, 'cause that's how it seems;
I miss your friendship and soft silly kisses
but at least I can hold you tonight in my dreams.

And we're dancing: dancing like shadows,
Dancing like firelight cast on a wall;
And we're dancing: dancing like children ...
Spinning and laughing and having a ball:

We tango like lovers, and waltz like Matilda,
The world falls away and it's only we two;
Some day I know I will hold you forever
But for now when I'm dreaming I'm dancing with you.

We were not asked for our terms of surrender ...
But everything's legal in war and romance;
I don't see the ballroom and can't hear the music,
But I know I will hold you tonight when we dance.

And we're dancing: dancing like fireflies,
Dancing like dandelions caught on the wind;
And we're dancing: I'm Fred and you're Ginger,
Twirling and dipping again and again:

We tango like lovers, and waltz like Matilda,
The world falls away and it's only we two;
Some day I know I will hold you forever
But for now when I'm dreaming I'm dancing with you.

Whenever I'm dreaming I'm dancing with you.

beautiful... do you have music written for this too?

I especially like the lines with the firelight, fireflies and dandelions caught on the wind. :)

I read. I cried. I had to spend the next 5 minutes composing myself just in case anyone walked into my cube. You do like to hit on people's raw emotions don't you.

Mlou: My favorite line is " We tango like lovers, and waltz like Matilda"

That's lovely, Mudge. It's very visual and you can feel it took (which is important for a poem).

I don't mean to sound like I'm a loser
But lately, losing's what I do the most;
Every spark I reach for turns to ashes ...
Old mistakes still haunt me like a ghost.

I get up every morning just to wade through all this sh!t
I'm too far gone to make it but I'm just too dumb to quit;
I fight my way to heaven, unredeemed and undefiled ...
Amanda, make me smile.

And I'm not here to point a blaming finger;
The choices I have made have kept me free.
The road did not end up where I intended ...
But if anyone's to blame it would be me.

Some people call me stubborn but I'm mostly just afraid ...
A heart that's true to nothing is the only price I've paid.
But there are days that make at least a part of it worthwhile:
Amanda, make me smile.

Make me smile, just tell me that you love me ...
Make me smile, despite the pain I've felt;
Make me smile, if only for a moment:
Make me smile, if only at myself ...

Stuck between the Now and Ever-After,
You're the one who keeps me hanging on;
I think of you, the rest of it is easy ...
I think of you and suddenly I'm strong.

Shining in the distance like a yet-unanswered prayer,
Today is smoke and embers but tomorrow I'll be there,
And I can crawl into your arms as peaceful as a child ...
Amanda, make me smile ...
Amanda, make me smile.

As usual, Mudge, I want to hear the music that goes with it. Are you strumming on your ol' guitar when you compose your lyrics? Any particular reason that we should know about,
for starring Amanda?
The only line that confuses me a bit is line 3, 2nd verse. .. unredeemed and undefiled. I know they have a nice rhythm but those 2 words seem to be at odds. If you're undefiled you don't need to be redeemed, do you? And if you've made a lot of mistakes, etc., might you be just a little defiled?
Excellent job!

Thanks, Mlou. No guitar yet on this one. And as for "unredeemed and undefiled", you pegged it: doesn't really make sense, but it sounded so cool ... figured I'd leave it until I narrow in on what I am trying to say.

"Amanda": has three syllables, and I like the sound of it. That's it.

the way it goes it almost seems it should be the opposite of undefiled - since you are fighting your way to heaven?

I get up every morning just to wade through all this sh!t
I'm too far gone to make it but I'm just too dumb to quit;
I fight my way to heaven, unredeemed and undefiled ...

maybe tainted instead of undefiled, besmirched - though that sounds more awkward (only 2 syllables though)...degraded and unredeemed... hmmm..

as usual though, i really like the song/poem...

"Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories - we've already missed the spring"

"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it's about learning how to dance in the rain."
