Short Story getting published
Posted: Mon Dec 31, 2007 12:19 am
I got an email today from a magazine and they wanted me to type up a bio because they are publishing a short story I wrote! It will be published in their January issue. It's a brand new magazine and January's issue will be the first one. It's also my first time ever being published so I'm pretty excited.
I wanted to be sure and say thanks to all of you guys for always being here for support and/or encouragement even though my visits are sporadic. Especially a big thank you to Anblick because the seeds of the story were planted in one of your writing challenges that I think I did in the beginning of 2006. (It's the one where I had to write a description and it ended up being a description of a box- a box I actually do have here in my little basement office which really is full of tarot cards.)
Anyway, just thought I'd share my news and say thanks.
Happy New Year,

Bet that gives you a great feeling--and what a great way to usher in the new year. Congrats!

Yep. I'm pretty excited, even though there is no payment. I used to say I will never submit to anyplace that doesn't pay, and before this, I never did. If the magazine does well, which I think it will, she will be able to compensate writers in the future. As for me, at least now I can say I accomplished a goal. It's definitely the motivation I needed to keep writing in the new year.

I anticipate friends saying, "But you only got ten dollars for--what? Twenty hours of work?" Looking back on '07 with more than half a dozen "sales", I may not have received the compensation, but I've notched my resume and can use these bona fides to interest other editors who do pay.
Few writers, I think, write for the money. It pays less than mugging old ladies (I've been told). I do it for fulfillment and to exorcise the ghosts. I've explored historical oddities that interested me. I've shared nice-to-know information. And occasionally, I've come up with an insight or two that's worth pondering. It's a way to connect with the world and shake some sense out of it.

Cool, thx donduck. Be forewarned- it's a magazine for tarot readers by tarotreaders, it may not be a subject that interests everyone, but it works for me.

It will work for me as well. I find it interesting, and one of my characters in one of my stories is into it as well. Much to the annoyance of her best friend . . .

Cool! I can relate to your character then

Thanks, buddy! Well, it's a short story with a tarot related theme that also shows a little bit about the way we as adults and/or tarot readers can impact the perceptions of children in a positive way.

I already did haha. The Portal to the past challenge had me writing an entire story that I started yesterday and finished not 5 minutes ago. I'm going to submit it to the magazine soon. I need to proofread first etc.
