My first post!!!

Postby flashgordon » Sat Jun 21, 2008 10:18 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new here and am looking forward to jumping into the fun. I'm mostly a nonfiction writer, covering social science issues. I also do a lot of technical writing on various topics - mostly government related. Finally, I blog a bunch about indigenous peoples and books.

Other then that, I try and spend all my free time in the mountains.

Cheers.

flashgordon, eh? Without giving away age, I admit to remembering when Flash was really big in the Saturday afternoon matinees...2 movies, 3or 4 serials, a bunch of cartoons, and ads for candy on sale in the lobby. But..um..that does give it away, doesn't it? :-D Anyway, welcome. Hope you'll try the challenges.

Welcome! Sounds like you'll bring an interesting, new knowledge base to our boards. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the topics you write about. I was a political science major and I love all kinds of non-fiction writing. I'm reading Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond at the moment-have you ever read it? It's quite an interesting take on cultural anthropology. Anyway, see you around the boards.

Yep, Jared Diamond's book is very well written. His facts are stretched a bit to make his point, as they are in his subsequent book Collapse. But that is just nit-picking. I put him in the same class as Brian Fagan when it comes to modern writers of social science topics - good but not 100% accurate. Of course, if you ever get into philosophy you will learn that no one is, ever.
